Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialized technique that may be used as part of care for cancer-related lymphedema. For people who have had breast cancer treatment, lymph node removal or radiation, MLD can help encourage lymph fluid to move away from areas affected by swelling. Maybe your arm or the side of your chest feels swollen or heavy. Your skin or scars feel tender, tight or sensitive. Perhaps reaching overhead is harder than it used to be, or you feel a rope-like band beneath your arm and a pulling sensation that travels from your breast or underarm toward your elbow. You may also be noticing tingling or numbness and wondering which changes are part of recovery, and which deserve more attention.
You don’t need to have the answers before you come in. We’ll start by listening to what you’ve been experiencing, reviewing your treatment history and discussing what you’d like help with. Your therapist will explain what they find, whether gentle Manual Lymphatic Drainage is appropriate, and how your session can be adapted to your comfort.
You’re always in control of the pace and what areas are treated. If your symptoms call for another type of care or a conversation with your oncology team, we’ll be honest about that too. Our goal is for you to feel heard, informed and supported from your very first visit.
